Progressive media figure Hasan Piker has predicted the end of Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner's campaign following a sexual assault allegation. Piker, a prominent Twitch host, stated on his livestream that he believes the accusation made by Platner's ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot.
He reacted to Politico's reporting on the allegations, noting details such as Racicot having confided in a friend and a therapist about the alleged incident years before Platner entered politics. Piker described these elements as forming "the trifecta of a reliable allegation."
"I believe this, this accusation. I believe this allegation," Piker said to his audience. "Personal first-hand testimony to a friend, a close confidant, back from way before Graham Platner ever f---ing ran for Congress? And also direct testimony from a therapist?"
Other media figures have also commented on the allegations. Luke Russert of MS NOW suggested that if the allegations are true, Platner could not remain the Democratic nominee for senator in Maine. The Bulwark's Tim Miller criticized Platner's campaign statement, which indicated they were "taking time to reflect on the best path forward," asserting that Platner must either campaign with vigor if the claims are false or withdraw.
Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau called the allegations "awful, credible" and stated that Platner has not been honest about his past. Favreau added that the Democratic Party has a deadline of the 27th to find a replacement nominee, provided Platner withdraws by the 13th.
Platner's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The allegations emerged as Platner is involved in a crucial Senate race in Maine.
