Socialist streamer Hasan Piker has voiced support for anti-Israel protesters who heckled New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a recent vigil. Critics observed the exchange, suggesting it highlighted divisions within the political left.

Piker, 35, expressed confusion and dismay on a livestream while viewing footage of Mamdani attending a memorial in Union Square organized by 'Israelis for Peace.' The event was intended to commemorate both Israeli victims of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack and Palestinians killed in the subsequent conflict.

"The f–k? What the hell is going on in New York City, man?" Piker stated, appearing surprised that the event was an Israeli-organized vigil. "This was the vigil? I thought it was the pro-Palestine rally… it was an Israeli rally? Israelis for peace? The f–k?"

His reaction came as protesters chanted slogans such as "We charge you with genocide" at Mamdani. Some individuals in the crowd reportedly shouted, "You coward!"

Piker criticized Mamdani's approach, suggesting he had fallen into a "Goldilocks-zone trap" by attempting to appease both sides, which Piker argued ultimately pleased neither. He indicated that if Mamdani had taken stronger actions related to earlier promises, there might have been less negative reaction.

Piker also commented on Mamdani's earlier public statement, which he felt offered minimal acknowledgment to the victims of Oct. 7 before focusing on what Piker described as "the Israeli government's devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza."

Clips of Piker's remarks circulated online, leading to commentary from users who characterized the situation as the left consuming itself. One user wrote, "The left eating itself is the left’s favorite hobby."

Following the vigil, Mamdani was later seen dining at a Palestinian restaurant known for its critical stance on Israel. This choice of venue did not appease his critics, as one masked activist was heard shouting at him after he left the restaurant, "Stop being a f–king traitor."
