Hasan Piker Accused of Racial Profiling for Dividing White Voters
Far-left streamer faces backlash for categorizing White Americans into 'good' and 'bad' groups.
Far-left streamer Hasan Piker is facing accusations of racial profiling after recently distinguishing between what he described as "good Whites" and "bad Whites" while discussing strategies to engage conservative voters.
In a recent interview with New York Magazine, Piker, who identifies as a Westernized "White guy," articulated his view that certain groups of White Americans can be mobilized by Democrats. He specifically mentioned Wisconsin's White population, characterizing them as "German, Dutch, old trade unionists," in contrast to what he termed the "libertarian streak of White folk" found in places like Texas.
Piker suggested that Democrats have struggled to connect with these segments of White conservatives, positing that they have been "socially conditioned" by what he described as a "propaganda apparatus" and "Reagan neoliberalism."
"Maybe at some point, due to Reagan neoliberalism and unbelievable amounts of culture war, a fairly successful reactionary propaganda apparatus that is constantly churning out slop, people got duped, where they’re like, ‘Yeah, maybe the Democrats aren’t really invested in our well-being; maybe it is the Mexicans who need to be purged,’" Piker stated.
He shared an anecdote about an encounter in a Milwaukee hotel lobby with a White woman who requested a photo and thanked him for his work, which he then used as an example of encountering "good Whites."
Democratic strategist Doug Friednash criticized Piker's remarks, telling Fox News Digital that "every leader" in the Democratic Party should condemn such comments. Friednash labeled Piker a "cancer to America" and stated that dividing Americans into "good Whites" and "bad Whites" constitutes racial profiling.
"If someone on the far right talked this way about Black, Latino or even Jewish Americans, Democrats would rightly condemn it and call it racist," Friednash added.
Piker's proposed strategy for engaging these voters involves offering social welfare benefits, including housing and Medicare for All, irrespective of their social or political views. "My theory of change is I’m going to tell the racists they deserve housing, too," he said. "I’m going to tell them, ‘Look, you’re going to get healthcare, Medicare for All, single-payer. And if you’re transphobic, you’re still going to get it. But trans people are going to get it too. Are you not going to vote for that?’"
Friednash warned that Piker's association with the Democratic Party could be detrimental to their electoral prospects. "Democrats need to make clear that Hasan Piker and his brand of communism have no place in the Democratic Party," he said. "The more he becomes associated with Democrats, the more working-class and independent voters we drive away."
This controversy comes as Democrats intensify their efforts in the lead-up to the November elections. Piker, a self-described Marxist streamer, has previously faced scrutiny and backlash for his public statements and political commentary.
