Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for NYC Sex Crimes

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for his conviction on sex crime charges in New York, a sentence that could see the disgraced Hollywood mogul die behind bars. The sentence comes after prosecutors revealed they had recordings of Weinstein offering a podcaster $1.75 million in advance of his latest trial to smear his victims and contaminate the jury pool.

Weinstein, 74, appeared in court in a wheelchair, with his legal team describing him as "a very sick man" wasting away in Rikers Island. He pleaded for mercy, telling Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber, "I am not a perfect person. I am a person who has made mistakes. I really do have remorse for Miriam Haley."

Prosecutors had sought a 20-year sentence for the "significant harms" Weinstein's actions caused to Haley, the former TV production assistant he was convicted of sexually assaulting in the first degree. The conviction stemmed from an assault in 2025, though the initial incident occurred earlier. Weinstein faced a maximum of 25 years.

This sentencing concludes a lengthy legal battle that began with Weinstein's first trial nearly six years ago in 2020. In that trial, he was convicted of third-degree rape for an assault in 2013. However, New York's highest appeals court overturned that conviction, leading to a new trial.

During the second trial in 2025, a new accuser, Kaja Sokola, alleged sexual assault when she was a teenager. A jury convicted Weinstein of the assault on Haley but was deadlocked on the charges involving Sokola, resulting in a mistrial for that count. Prosecutors opted for a third trial, which also ended with a hung jury as they could not reach a unanimous decision. The victim in the third trial, Jessica Mann, opted not to testify again, leading prosecutors to forgo a fourth trial.

Haley is one of approximately 80 women who have accused Weinstein of sexual assault and misconduct. She stated she was inspired to come forward after seeing other women share their experiences during the #MeToo movement. Weinstein has been incarcerated at Rikers Island, where he has reportedly complained about his health and jail conditions. He is also serving a 16-year sentence from a December 2022 California conviction for rape and sexual assault.
