Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for 2006 Sexual Assault

Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for the 2006 sexual assault of former "Project Runway" production assistant Miriam Haley. The sentence concludes a lengthy legal process that began with Weinstein's initial conviction in 2020.

Weinstein, 74, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court in a wheelchair for the sentencing. He had been found guilty in June 2025 of first-degree criminal sexual act involving Haley. Judge Curtis Farber delivered the sentence, stating, "You took what you wanted by force, and you have never accepted responsibility."

Haley delivered a victim impact statement, describing the lasting effects of the assault. "He abused his position and power," she said, adding, "It is a life sentence for me." Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg praised Haley's courage and steadfastness throughout the legal proceedings.

Weinstein has consistently denied over 80 allegations of sexual misconduct. Addressing the court before sentencing, he stated, "I am not a perfect person. But I am a person who has made mistakes." He also apologized to anyone he may have hurt but continued to deny the allegations, insisting, "I am not a violent man."

The 15-year sentence will be followed by five years of supervised release, and Weinstein is required to register as a sex offender. He is already serving a separate 16-year sentence from a California conviction for rape and sexual assault, though an appeals court has vacated that sentence and he awaits resentencing in that case.

Weinstein's legal troubles began following investigations in 2017 that detailed numerous allegations of sexual misconduct. His initial conviction in New York in 2020 for the assaults on Haley and former model Jessica Mann resulted in a 23-year sentence. However, New York's highest court overturned that conviction in 2024, citing improperly admitted testimony.

The retrial in 2025 led to Weinstein's conviction for the assault on Haley, but jurors acquitted him on a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. A separate charge involving Jessica Mann ended in a mistrial and was not pursued further.

Haley's attorney, Gloria Allred, described her client's pursuit of justice as a "trial by fire." "Mimi is a true hero. She has survived all attempts both inside and outside of court to discredit her or question her motives," Allred said.

Weinstein, once a powerful figure in Hollywood who co-founded Miramax and produced Oscar-winning films, has seen his career and reputation collapse following the widespread allegations. The phrase "Me Too" became a global movement following the revelations about his conduct and that of others across various industries.
