Harry Styles Honors Late One Direction Bandmate Liam Payne with New Song
Styles performed a previously unheard track, 'What Is Enough,' during his Madison Square Garden concert on the two-year anniversary of Payne's death.
Harry Styles paid a poignant tribute to his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne by performing a new song during his concert at Madison Square Garden. The unreleased track, titled "What Is Enough," was written by Styles following Payne's death.
During his 30-night residency in New York City, Styles addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude for the venue and his name displayed there. He then introduced the song, stating, "I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me... And I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there." He continued to reflect on those who have supported him, acknowledging that two years prior, he lost a significant friend.
Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31. His death occurred after a fall from the third floor of his hotel room in Argentina, resulting in severe injuries including internal and external bleeding.
Styles shared that the song was for his friend, emphasizing the importance of mutual support. "I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t, but really, it’s just about looking after each other," he told the audience.
Following Payne's passing, Styles and his former One Direction bandmates—Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan—released a joint statement expressing their devastation. The statement read, "We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam."
The band members later reunited for the first time in nearly nine years at Payne's funeral in the UK.
Styles also posted a personal tribute on Instagram, calling himself "truly devastated" by the loss. He described Payne as having a "kindest heart who just wanted to be great" and shared, "The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend." He extended his condolences to Payne's family, his son, Bear, and Payne's global fanbase.
In a more recent interview with Apple Music, Styles discussed the profound difficulty of losing Payne, noting how strange it is to share grief with others connected to the deceased. He described Payne as someone "with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great" and expressed how difficult it is to lose a friend, especially one so similar to himself in many ways.
