Harry Styles Credits Ex-Girlfriend for Overcoming Fear of Public Outings
The singer revealed how a past relationship helped him feel more comfortable being outside his home.
Harry Styles has shared how a past relationship with an "outgoing" girlfriend helped him overcome a fear of being seen in public, a challenge stemming from his early days in One Direction. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine conducted by Thom Yorke, Styles discussed how the intense fame of his boy band years led to periods where he felt unsafe leaving his hotel.
"I think in the early days, when I was in the band, so much of the hotel experience felt very locked-in," Styles explained. "When I’d be home, it felt like, ‘Oh, it’s not safe for me to be out.’"
This changed when a former girlfriend, described as very outgoing, visited him in London. "I was like, ‘Oh, if we just sit in my house for three days, she’s gonna think I’m nuts,’" he recalled. "So we walked everywhere, and it was this realization for me: ‘Oh, it’s fine to be outside.’ It kind of broke that thing. Now, it’s changed my life in such a big way, because it’s how you stay connected to the world."
While Styles did not name the girlfriend, the interview notes suggest he might have been referring to his relationship with Taylor Swift, whom he dated around 2012 when he was 18 and she was 22.
He added that walking in public offers artists a valuable perspective. "I read something about walking being the artist’s kind of perspective, because you’re at ground level and you see things that you just don’t see if you’re driving everywhere," he said.
Beyond walking, Styles is known to be active, frequently seen running or using Lime bikes. He also surprised fans by participating in the Tokyo marathon last year. Despite his global fame, Styles believes his constant movement helps him avoid immediate recognition.
"Well, the main thing is that you’re always moving. You can turn a corner wherever," he told Runner's World. "I think with people who see me, it’s a bit more ‘Was that…?’ rather than, ‘Oh look it’s him!’ And by that time, you’re already gone."
The conversation about public comfort comes as Styles reflected on his life choices, including a hiatus from music. He mentioned taking time to consider his future after observing friends marry and start families, and realizing a desire for his own family and fulfilling relationships. "I want to be fulfilled and I want to be in great relationships with people. I want to have great friendships with people. I want a family. I want these things," he stated. His current relationship with actress Zoë Kravitz is described as strengthening, with the couple having first been seen together in August 2025.
