Harry Potter Play Cuts To One Show Due To Cost of Living Crisis
Producers cited a 30-40% increase in running costs since the pandemic as making the two-part format financially untenable.
The West End production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will reopen next month as a single, three-hour show, a move necessitated by the rising cost of living, according to producer Sonia Friedman. The original two-part format, which premiered in London in 2016, is no longer financially feasible, Friedman stated. "The cost of living has gone up 30-40% since the pandemic, including running shows," she explained. "The only way we could continue to run it as a two-parter would be by charging an amount for the tickets that would be unaffordable and inaccessible."
The decision to condense the play follows a similar shift for its Broadway production, which relaunched as a single show in 2021. Friedman noted that the pandemic, economic pressures, and global conflicts accelerated this decision for the New York production, and the same factors influenced the London change. "Of course we'll miss it but it was absolutely the right call and we've got a beautiful alternate version that we're very proud of," she added.
Director John Tiffany and writer Jack Thorne were reportedly hesitant to alter the original script, which had been successful as a two-part narrative. However, Tiffany indicated that the single-show format will allow more people to experience the production at a more accessible price point. "More people are going to get to see this show and not have to pay a fortune for it," he said.
The play, a sequel to J.K. Rowling's book series, is set 19 years after the final novel and focuses on Harry Potter's son, Albus Severus, as he begins his education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Globally, the production has been seen by over 14 million people, with more than 2.5 million attending the London run.
The reimagined one-part production will feature some returning cast members, including David Ricardo-Pearce as Harry Potter, Thomas Aldridge as Ron Weasley, and Naana Agyei Ampadu as Hermione Granger. New actors have been cast in the roles of Albus Potter, Ginny Potter, Rose Granger-Weasley, Draco Malfoy, and Scorpius Malfoy.
