England captain Harry Kane was honored with the Ballon d'Or award in a ceremony held at London's Palladium, marking a significant achievement for the forward. The event saw support from members of the England women's national football team, the Lionesses, including goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
Kane, who now plays for Bayern Munich, was recognized as the top footballer, surpassing competitors Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal. His wife, Katie Kane, also attended the ceremony. The event featured a performance by singer Jorja Smith and an appearance by actress Sophie Turner.
Hampton, nominated for women's goalkeeper of the year, finished fourth in her category. She was accompanied by Chelsea teammates Veerle Buurman, Manaka Matsukubo, and Melvine Malard. Other Lionesses in attendance included Lucy Bronze, who wore a burgundy gown, and Alex Greenwood, who was ranked 26th among the world's top female footballers and wore a black satin dress. Arsenal star Alessia Russo, who placed ninth in the women's rankings, was also present in a black gown.
Kane's victory makes him the first English player in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or, following Michael Owen in 2001. He scored 73 goals across all competitions last season. Tributes poured in, including a message from Prince William, who has collaborated with Kane on mental health initiatives and is the official patron of the FA. Prince William noted Kane's achievements as a captain and player, highlighting his ability to create unforgettable moments for football fans.
Reflecting on the win, Kane expressed his elation, stating, "I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special." He thanked everyone who voted for him.
England manager Thomas Tuchel commended Kane, calling the award a deserved recognition of his talent. Tuchel highlighted Kane's status as England's record appearance-maker and all-time top goalscorer, emphasizing his leadership role. "To become the first Englishman to win this huge honor in 25 years makes it extra special and we are lucky to have you as our leader," Tuchel stated.
Well-wishes also came from former England players Wayne Rooney, John Terry, and Gary Neville, as well as Kane's former Tottenham teammate Heung-min Son. The Wembley Arch was illuminated in his honor.
Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli shared his happiness for Kane, praising his "resilience, hard work and honesty." Ridgeway Rovers, Kane's youth club, also expressed pride in his accomplishment, calling him "one of our own."
