Harry Kane Reports Vincent Kompany 'On the Mend' Amid Bayern Munich Coaching Uncertainty
With manager Vincent Kompany still hospitalized, assistant Aaron Danks will continue to lead Bayern Munich.
Harry Kane, fresh off his Ballon d'Or win, has provided an update on the health of Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany, confirming that the Belgian coach is "on the mend" while recovering in hospital.
In Kompany's absence, English coach Aaron Danks, 43, has stepped in to manage the team. Danks is slated to lead Bayern Munich in their upcoming DFB Cup match against Magdeburg and the Bundesliga fixture against Borussia Dortmund. He successfully guided the team to a 3-1 away victory against Freiburg over the weekend, marking a promising start to his interim tenure.
Kompany collapsed last week during a training session and was subsequently hospitalized. While the incident deeply affected those present, Kompany's condition has since stabilized.
Kane spoke about Kompany's recovery after attending the Ballon d'Or ceremony. "He actually phoned me, phoned me bright and early at 9am (Monday)," Kane shared. "He just wanted to wish me all the best, good luck. I asked him how he was doing, he said he feels good, he feels like he's on the mend."
Kane added that Kompany is eager to return to the team but emphasized the importance of his recovery. "He wants to be out on the training field with us, on the bench with us. But it's important that he rests, you know? He's been going through a bit of a tough time with his health recently, and we can hopefully cover it, the staff can cover it."
Danks, who previously served as Kompany's assistant at Anderlecht and held assistant coaching roles at Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, reunited with Kompany at Bayern Munich. He is now shouldering the responsibility at the German club until Kompany is fit to return, a process that could take several weeks.
Kompany is reportedly recovering from a viral infection that exacerbated old scar tissue in his hip, causing him pain and difficulty with basic mobility.
Danks offered his own update on Tuesday, stating, "Vincent is in good spirits. It looks like every day he is getting better. Let him rest, let him take his time."
According to reports from BILD, several figures within Bayern Munich had expressed concerns about Kompany's work habits prior to his collapse, citing a lack of work-life balance, insufficient sleep, irregular eating patterns, and excessive coffee consumption.
Kane is set to return to Bayern training shortly after his Ballon d'Or celebration, though it remains uncertain if he will feature in the midweek cup game or the upcoming clash with Dortmund. Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga standings and is participating in the Champions League league phase.
