Harry Kane Considers NFL Kicker Role Amid MLS Ambitions

England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has expressed interest in pursuing a career as an NFL kicker in the future, potentially while also playing in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Kane, who is currently with the England national team during an international break, stated that he would "look at a bit more seriously" the possibility of becoming an NFL kicker, should his football career allow for it over the next five to six years. He contrasted this with his interest in golf, noting that the NFL prospect is "a lot more realistic."

"It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do," Kane told reporters, according to The Athletic. "The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way."

The 33-year-old striker also discussed the potential for playing in MLS at some point in his career. He mused about the possibility of aligning his soccer commitments with an NFL role, suggesting that the differing seasons might make such a dual career feasible. "Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two maybe with the seasons," he said, per the Associated Press.

While no player in the 31-year history of MLS has concurrently played in the NFL, the NFL has seen athletes who excelled in multiple professional sports, such as Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson, who played both NFL football and Major League Baseball. The transition from soccer to kicking in American football is not unprecedented at lower levels; Brandon Aubrey gained attention for becoming the Dallas Cowboys' kicker after a professional soccer career in his early twenties.

Kane acknowledged that a move to the United States is not imminent, but this marks the first time he has publicly spoken about the possibility of playing in MLS. "But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here," he said.

Kane also indicated that he is close to finalizing a new contract with his current club, Bayern Munich. This season, he has recorded three goals and one assist in three starts for the German club.
