Harris Leaves 2028 Presidential Run Open, Emphasizes 2026 Midterms
The former vice president stated that future presidential elections are contingent on the outcomes of the upcoming midterm elections.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris stated Tuesday that she has not yet decided on a potential 2028 presidential run, emphasizing that the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections is paramount. "I do, I do sincerely believe 28 won't matter if we don't get through 26," Harris said during a fireside chat with NAACP leaders in Detroit.
When asked directly about whether a 2028 presidential campaign was "on your plate," Harris responded, "I have not decided if I'm going to run again." She then pivoted to the importance of the upcoming midterms, urging voters to participate.
Earlier in the day, Harris participated in a roundtable discussion in Detroit focused on Black maternal health and healthcare costs, campaigning alongside Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. During this event, Harris criticized former President Donald Trump's healthcare policies.
Harris' remarks come as she focuses on campaigning for the 2026 elections, while keeping the possibility of a future presidential bid open. She became the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024 after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign, ultimately losing the election to Trump.
