Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., secured the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, aiming to succeed retiring Sen. Cynthia Lummis in a state with a strong Republican voter base. Hageman, who is currently serving her second term as Wyoming's sole representative in the U.S. House, emerged victorious from a five-way primary race on Tuesday.
Her primary opponents included former Kirby Mayor Sam Mead, Jill Edwards, John Holtz, and Jimmy Skovgard. Hageman entered the primary as a well-known and well-funded candidate in Wyoming, the state with the highest percentage of registered Republican voters nationwide. President Donald Trump has previously endorsed Hageman, notably supporting her successful 2022 campaign to unseat former Rep. Liz Cheney.
Hageman's national profile significantly rose following her primary victory over Cheney. Cheney became a prominent target for Trump after serving on the House Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot. As one of the two Republicans on the committee, Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, became one of Trump's most vocal Republican critics.
Senate Race in Wyoming
Hageman will now face the Democratic nominee in the general election on November 3. However, given Wyoming's political landscape, the seat is considered a strong Republican hold. The Cook Political Report rates the at-large seat as solidly Republican with an R+23 rating, making it one of the most secure Senate races of the election cycle.
Republicans hold all of Wyoming's statewide elected offices. The current Senate contest is part of a notable period of political transition in the state, with open races for governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House occurring simultaneously for the first time in 32 years.
