Harbaugh Open to Veteran Quarterback Addition Following Dart's Injury

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh indicated that the team is open to acquiring a veteran quarterback following the season-ending knee injury sustained by Jaxson Dart.

Dart's injury, which occurred just two weeks into the season, has thrust Jameis Winston into the starting role, with Jake Haener being promoted from the practice squad to serve as his backup. Harbaugh acknowledged the potential need for additional depth at the quarterback position.

"You know, I think I would probably,’’ Harbaugh said when asked about adding a veteran, “but you’ve kind of got to go with what’s available as well. And you never know, if a younger guy becomes available that’s interesting, that would fit — and I think we’re looking at all that.’’

Harbaugh, in his second season with the Giants, stated, “All options are open right now,” when questioned about the possibility of a trade for a quarterback.

Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who has spent 12 years in the NFL and led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl in 2019, has been identified as a potential free-agent option. Garoppolo has a 43-21 record as a starter and has backed up Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams for the past two seasons. He has expressed his continued desire to play in the NFL.

Another potential trade option mentioned is Joe Flacco, who previously played under Harbaugh in Baltimore.

The Giants' early season momentum was disrupted by their loss to the Rams, during which Dart sustained his injury. Harbaugh characterized Dart's absence as a significant blow, stating, “Yeah, it’s a big loss for sure. I mean, it’s your starting quarterback. It’s a tough loss.”
