Harbaugh Dismisses 'Conspiracy Theories' in Odell Beckham Jr.'s Giants Release
Head coach John Harbaugh stated the decision to cut Odell Beckham Jr. was purely a team-focused move, not influenced by external factors or 'noise.'
New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has strongly refuted any notion of ulterior motives or conspiracy surrounding the release of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after a brief, three-game stint with the team.
Harbaugh emphasized that the decision was solely based on what he deemed best for the team's offense and overall performance. "If you think it’s anything else then you don’t know me and you don’t know what we are doing here," Harbaugh stated Wednesday. "His roster spot is not doing enough for our offense, not doing enough for our team. So we need to make a change."
Beckham, who had recently returned after missing the entire previous season due to injury, played limited snaps and recorded minimal statistics during his time with the Giants. Harbaugh noted that the move was not entirely unexpected by Beckham himself. "He’s not thrilled with it, either. He wants to play."
Addressing speculation, Harbaugh was direct: "There’s no deep conversation, no conspiracy theory. We’re trying to win games. Any speculation of that is just noise. It’s the last thing I care about. I’m not hiding anything. It’s not Watergate."
Harbaugh informed Beckham of the "difficult" decision on Tuesday and expressed well wishes for his future endeavors. "We just weren’t getting enough," Harbaugh explained. "It just wasn’t working for us. I told him, 'I wanted to get him on the field more.' For whatever reason, we weren’t able to do it. Put it on us."
Beckham, who previously played for the Giants from 2014 to 2018, had returned to the franchise aiming to complete a full-circle journey. The team has since replaced him on the roster with receivers Braxton Berrios and Charlie Jones.
When questioned about Beckham's limited opportunities, especially given the team's struggles to score touchdowns in recent games, Harbaugh cited the complexities of game planning and play-calling. "It’s not like a logic high school debate," he said. "We didn’t think it would make us better, or we would have had him on the field. That’s really the end of the conversation."
Beckham's iconic No. 13 jersey has been assigned to third-string quarterback Jake Haener. Harbaugh concluded by expressing hope that Beckham finds a new team and opportunity. "I hope he lands somewhere, gets a shot," Harbaugh said. "I think he’s determined to. Probably will be a better situation for him. It just wasn’t working here. That’s all that needs to be said."
