Harbaugh Defends Decision to Pursue Overtime in Giants' Tie
Giants coach prioritizes a chance to win in overtime over a two-point conversion attempt late in the game.

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh defended his decision to opt for an extra point and pursue overtime rather than attempt a two-point conversion that could have secured a regulation win in Sunday's 27-27 tie against the Washington Commanders.
Harbaugh stated that sometimes a coach must rely on instinct over analytics. The Giants were trailing by 14 points with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter after tight end Isaiah Likely scored a touchdown. While analytics often suggest going for two in such a situation to maximize the chances of winning in regulation, Harbaugh chose to kick the extra point.
"I think generally speaking, theoretically, you go for two," Harbaugh said Monday. "Then you see if you have to go for two twice, give yourself a chance to win the game in regulation. But the way the game was going, I just decided I wanted to put it into overtime. I didn’t want to take the chance on the 2-point conversion. I thought overtime would give us the best chance."
He further explained that in a road division game, a tie is not necessarily the worst outcome for the trailing team. After the Giants narrowed the deficit to 27-20 with an extra point, they later scored another touchdown with 1:43 remaining to bring the score to 27-26. Instead of attempting a two-point conversion to win, Harbaugh again opted for the extra point to force overtime.
In other team news, Harbaugh provided an update on several injured players. Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), safety Tyler Nubin (neck), and cornerback Colton Hood (concussion) are all considered day-to-day. Harbaugh expects them to have a chance to play in the upcoming game against the Saints.
Center Bryan Hudson will retain his starting position for the second consecutive game, with Harbaugh indicating he will continue to start for the upcoming week, though John Michael Schmitz Jr. remains part of the team's plans.
Harbaugh also introduced a weekly "Purple Heart" award to recognize players who return from injury to play. Wide receiver Malik Nabers received the award in Week 1 for his return from a knee injury, and offensive tackle Andrew Thomas earned it this week for his recovery from a groin issue.
