Fox News host Sean Hannity is facing criticism for what some are calling a double standard in his coverage of Senator Darline Graham's (R-S.C.) recent debate response regarding Taiwan and a similar instance involving Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) earlier this year.
During a recent debate, Graham, who is seeking to fill the seat of her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, acknowledged that "national security was not my thing" when asked if Taiwan and the South China Sea were national security issues for the United States. Following her remark, Hannity hosted Graham on his program and questioned why her answer was being scrutinized, suggesting that many Americans might not be able to locate Taiwan on a map.
This approach contrasts sharply with Hannity's reaction in February when Ocasio-Cortez stumbled at the Munich Security Conference while addressing whether the U.S. should commit to defending Taiwan against a potential Chinese invasion. At the time, Hannity characterized Ocasio-Cortez's response as "Wow, even worse than Hillary [Clinton], though, radical squad leader AOC simply could not answer basic questions about global affairs." He further compared her to a "Kamala Harris ‘word salad.’"
Ocasio-Cortez's earlier remarks drew criticism from then-President Donald Trump. Trump has since endorsed Graham in her bid for a full Senate term but has remained silent on her recent debate answer.
Critics, including CNN senior political reporter Aaron Blake, have highlighted Hannity's differing reactions. Blake commented on X (formerly Twitter), "This is pretty bad from Hannity."
