Prime Video's summer lineup includes the new action-adventure comedy series 'Ride Or Die,' starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer as best friends forced to flee after one's career as an assassin comes to light. The show blends elements of spy thrillers and buddy comedies, centering on the bond between Judith (Waddingham) and Debbie (Spencer).

Judith Burton, known by the alias "Whiptail," is a seasoned assassin with nearly 29 years of experience. Her latest mission, to eliminate a Russian war criminal, goes awry when she opts for a more personal kill method in front of witnesses. Agency representative Sam warns Judith that her increasingly unconventional methods, possibly linked to her approaching 50th birthday, are jeopardizing her career. Despite the warning, Judith insists on taking another assignment: assassinating crime syndicate leader Billy Donovan at a charity gala using poison.

Debbie Claybourne, Judith's best friend for two decades, lives a seemingly ordinary life in London as a forensic accountant. She has dedicated much of her life to supporting her husband, David Claybourne, a Member of Parliament with aspirations for prime minister. Unbeknownst to Debbie, David is involved in the illicit activities funding the charity gala.

The lives of both women are upended at the Water Relief gala. Judith is there to target Donovan, while Debbie is present to support David. Before the event, David informs Debbie of his intention to divorce her. During the gala, Judith fails to assassinate Donovan and retreats. The night culminates in David and several others being killed, with Judith protecting Debbie, who then learns of her friend's hidden life.

Now fugitives from law enforcement, assassins, and criminals, Judith and Debbie embark on a cross-European journey to survive. The series draws comparisons to shows like 'Killing Eve' and 'Barry,' while also highlighting strong female friendships found in series such as 'How to Get to Heaven from Belfast' and 'Bad Sisters.'

Critics have praised the series for its strong performances, particularly from Spencer and Waddingham, whose chemistry is noted as a highlight. The writing and execution are described as clever, subverting traditional spy thriller and buddy comedy tropes to create a fresh experience. The pacing, action, and overall production, from soundtrack to costumes, are deemed intentional and well-crafted.

Hannah Waddingham's portrayal of Judith is singled out for its balance of impressive action sequences and vulnerable depth. Octavia Spencer's performance as Debbie is also lauded for her charisma and ability to make the character's journey compelling. The series is considered suitable for a mature audience due to its themes of assassination and violence.

A mysterious hooded woman is introduced in the final moments, confronting a groundskeeper who last saw Judith. The woman, unimpressed by Judith's decision to spare a target, reveals she knows how to find them before fatally shooting the groundskeeper, indicating further danger for the protagonists.
