Singer Hannah Spearritt, formerly of the pop group S Club 7, has relocated to Costa Rica with her two daughters to pursue an off-grid lifestyle. Spearritt, 45, moved to the Central American country at the beginning of last year, seeking to "build the dream" by living off the land and finding a sense of recovery after what she described as a "difficult year."
Spearritt, who first gained fame in the late 1990s with S Club 7, relocated from southwest London with her partner Adam Thomas and their daughters, Téa and Tora. She has since shared updates on her Instagram account detailing her family's new way of living, which contrasts sharply with her previous life in the UK. "Just chilling, nothing glamorous, no red carpets, but these moments for me are what lights up my inner fire," Spearritt wrote in a caption reflecting on her current life.
Her social media posts have offered glimpses of their daily activities, including enjoying time around a fire pit with mountain views, bathing in volcanic hot springs, and hosting 6 a.m. "discos" on their balcony. Spearritt's Instagram bio now reads, "Prepper, survivalist and creator now living the uninhibited jungle life."
The move to Costa Rica has been a significant change for Spearritt, who experienced a series of personal challenges prior to her relocation. In 2023, she experienced grief following the death of her former bandmate and ex-partner, Paul Cattermole. This loss contributed to her decision to also leave the S Club 7 band. Shortly before Cattermole's death, Spearritt had also faced a period of homelessness, having spent six months living in various temporary accommodations with her family in late 2022. The family was reportedly forced to move between four different temporary homes and even stayed in a friend's office after their landlord sold the property on short notice.
Spearritt has spoken about the financial realities of a pop career, noting that "People think we must all be millionaires but sadly it's just not true." The family's decision to move to Costa Rica is believed to stem from a trip they took there in 2018, which inspired them to explore setting up a cafe in Twickenham. However, that venture did not fully materialize, and reports suggested they were selling up due to rising costs.
Spearritt had been expected to join S Club 7's 25th-anniversary reunion tour but withdrew due to contractual disputes. This led to the remaining five members continuing the tour without her. She has stated she has not been in contact with her former bandmates since her departure, expressing sadness but wishing them well as she embraces her new life.
Her Instagram bio indicates a focus on permaculture and fruit forest planting, with shared images of morning walks to waterfalls and the family's new home, which features a balcony overlooking the forest and mountains. She has described the location as a "magical place that has really helped me recover from a challenging year."
