Hannah Fry Joins 'Celebrity Traitors' After Developing Spreadsheet Strategy
The mathematician, who previously devised a statistical method to identify traitors, was recruited into the role herself on Thursday's episode.
Mathematician and broadcaster Hannah Fry has been recruited as a Traitor on the latest season of 'Celebrity Traitors,' after previously detailing a statistical approach she developed to identify them. Fry's recruitment occurred during Thursday's episode, joining Maya Jama and James Acaster as Traitors.
Earlier in the episode, Fry shared her strategy with fellow contestant Joe Lycett. She explained her method involved creating a comprehensive spreadsheet to track possible combinations of Traitors, inspired by Alan Turing's approach to breaking the Enigma code. Fry stated she would analyze all potential Traitor groupings and systematically eliminate possibilities.
Initially, with 21 contestants, there were 1,330 possible combinations for three Traitors. Fry's plan was to ask to remain a Faithful, which would allow her to eliminate universes where she was a Traitor, reducing the possibilities to 1,140. She also noted that she believed Traitors would not share similar characteristics, such as all being comedians or all being young, allowing for further elimination of potential groupings.
Fry also intended to track seating arrangements at breakfast, roundtables, and in cars, believing it unlikely for three Traitors to be in the same vehicle or sit together consecutively. She had also reviewed past seasons of 'The Traitors,' both celebrity and civilian, to identify statistically significant patterns in Traitor behavior, which she incorporated into her spreadsheet.
However, Fry's analytical strategy became obsolete when she was unexpectedly recruited as a Traitor herself. The recruitment was indicated at breakfast when both Fry and Jerry Hall returned, suggesting a new Traitor had been chosen. Fry expressed shock upon receiving her recruitment letter and must now attempt to play as a Faithful while secretly being a Traitor.
