Hamilton Secures Pole Position in Mexico as Antonelli Nears Championship Title

Lewis Hamilton secured his first pole position for Ferrari and his first in over three years at the Mexico City Grand Prix, overshadowing Kimi Antonelli's bid to become Formula 1's youngest-ever champion.

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, edged out his former Mercedes teammate George Russell by a mere 0.009 seconds to claim the top spot on the grid, his 105th career pole. The significance of this achievement is amplified by his previous struggles in his debut season with Ferrari. "It feels more special in this period where they're not every week and it's the first one with Ferrari in red," Hamilton stated, adding that the pole position answers questions about whether a 40-year-old driver still possesses elite capability. He also noted that achieving pole with three different teams is "pretty phenomenal."

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Italian Kimi Antonelli, a protege in the Mercedes lineage, is in a strong position to clinch the championship title. Despite qualifying fourth, a grid penalty for Max Verstappen moves him to the second row alongside Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc. Antonelli needs only to finish ninth or tenth, depending on Hamilton's or Russell's race outcome, to secure the maiden title.

"Records are there to be broken, you know," Hamilton said, describing Antonelli's impending achievement as "phenomenal." He expressed hope for future on-track battles with the young driver, acknowledging that "we didn't get to have any battles this year" due to performance differences.

Despite his favorable grid position, Antonelli admitted to feeling the pressure of the high-stakes weekend. "I just feel like I didn't do a good enough job out there and didn't have the most confidence," he said. "It hasn't been easy this weekend, to be fair, and especially to keep my emotions flat. Definitely I have been a bit more tense than usual, also that played a big factor."

Russell acknowledged the inevitability of Antonelli's championship. "In my mind, he's kind of already won the championship," Russell commented. "So that's something that I don't think I need to deal with." His personal priority is to "finish this season strong."

Hamilton's pole-sitting performance comes after a challenging 2025 season, during which he openly questioned his own performance and Ferrari's driver choices. His improved form in the current season, aided by a car he finds more to his liking, has been evident. While he leads Leclerc by eight championship points, their qualifying head-to-head is closely matched at 12-10 in Leclerc's favor. Hamilton acknowledged Leclerc's speed and familiarity with the Ferrari environment, stating, "I am still settling in and learning, with new engineers this year."

Adding to the challenge, Hamilton missed a crucial race-simulation run during second practice due to a car issue. "It will be a massive challenge to find the right balance but I am hopeful, it will be challenging and tough," he said.

For Antonelli, the focus remains on a clean race to secure the title. The long run to the first corner at Mexico City presents an opportunity for drivers on the second row to gain positions, but also carries the risk of first-corner incidents. The tension surrounding Antonelli's potential championship remains palpable, with his historic record-breaking achievement appearing to be a matter of time.
