The cost of Halloween candy has seen a dramatic increase, rising 71% over the past five years, far outpacing the national inflation rate. This surge means consumers are paying considerably more to fill their candy bowls for the upcoming holiday.
A study analyzing bulk Halloween candy prices at major supermarkets from 2021 to 2026 found that the average cost of a 100-piece bag of assorted candy is now $16.96, representing a 3.5% increase from the previous year and a $7.05 jump over the five-year period. The cost per piece of candy has risen to approximately 17 cents.
The most significant price hikes have occurred recently. Between 2023 and 2026, the cost of a 100-piece candy bag increased by $5.05, with substantial jumps in 2024 and 2025. This recent escalation is nearly triple the price increase seen in the preceding two years.
In areas like New York City, the cost is even higher. A 75-piece bag of Halloween candy at a Target in Times Square costs $20.68, amounting to 28 cents per piece. A 100-piece variety pack at CVS is priced at $23.40, and a 150-piece assortment at Walgreens is $30.
Several factors contribute to the escalating candy prices. The cost of cocoa, a primary ingredient, has sharply increased due to environmental factors and supply issues in key producing regions like Ghana and Ivory Coast, reaching a record high of $12,000 per ton in 2024. Beyond cocoa, other essential ingredients have also seen price increases, including sugar, vegetable oil, and petrochemicals used in plastic packaging.
Labor, energy, and transportation costs have also contributed to the price hikes. Furthermore, global events, such as conflicts in the Middle East, have led to disruptions in resin supplies, impacting packaging costs.
Despite the rising costs, consumer participation in Halloween celebrations remains high, with 74% of Americans planning to celebrate. Total consumer spending for the spooky season is projected to reach a record $13.5 billion.
To mitigate the increased expenses, some consumers are exploring alternative treat options. These include healthier choices like honey sticks, pretzel bags, or creatively decorated mandarin oranges. Sugar-free alternatives such as glow sticks, Halloween-themed pencils, temporary tattoos, and small toys are also gaining popularity as budget-friendly options. Some suggest creating a "choice bowls" that mix a smaller quantity of candy with a larger assortment of inexpensive toys or novelties.
