Outgoing Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens drew attention and criticism for her choice of a large straw hat while casting her ballot on Election Day. The accessory, which online observers compared to the hat worn by the video game character Carmen Sandiego, was noted by commentators as "concerning."
Stevens also courted controversy by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers for the Senate, a move that defied the state's Democratic nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. This eleventh-hour endorsement led some to label Stevens a "traitor" to her party.
According to reports, Stevens' fiancé, Jason Turkish, a Jewish Democrat, is said to have influenced her decision, citing concerns that El-Sayed's rhetoric "puts Jews at risk" and stating his intention to "put country before party."
Commentators on social media platform X weighed in on Stevens' appearance and political maneuver. Democratic ad maker Abby Anderson remarked that the hat was "concerning," while journalist Molly Jong Fast expressed disbelief, questioning, "Wait, no? This is real?" Another user, Jordan Zirm, quipped that Stevens "pulled up to the ballot box like she just put her life savings on a horse at the Kentucky Derby."
Despite her endorsement of a Republican candidate, Stevens expressed optimism that Democrats would regain control of the House, telling NewsNation, "It's the people's day. And I told this to our next Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries: It's Majority Makers Day."
Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed in August, maintained in a CNN interview that her decision to back Rogers was "rock solid." However, she had reportedly indicated to fellow Democrats hours earlier that she would not support the Republican candidate, a U-turn that reportedly caused anger among party members, resignations among her staff, and praise from former President Donald Trump.
When pressed by CNN's Anderson Cooper about the shift, Stevens cited El-Sayed's "angrier and angrier" behavior and criticized his appearances with streamer Hasan Piker, as well as some of his political associations. Stevens affirmed that she remained a proud Democrat throughout the process.
