Hakeem Jeffries: Democrats 'on the verge' of House control
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed confidence that Democrats are nearing a majority in the House of Representatives, a win that could position him to become the next Speaker of the House.
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that his party is "on the verge of taking back control of the House," expressing optimism about their chances in the upcoming midterm elections. If Democrats secure a majority, Jeffries is in line to become Speaker of the House, a position second in presidential succession.
Jeffries, who has campaigned in over 50 cities for House Democrats, framed the potential victory as part of a mission to usher in a "better chapter in the United States of America." He described the current political climate as marked by "unprecedented extremism" and emphasized a responsibility to "stop the madness" and "chart a more hopeful path."
Should he be elected Speaker, Jeffries would make history as the first Black American to hold the gavel. He represents a newer generation of leadership in Congress, known for a deliberate and calm approach. He would succeed Nancy Pelosi as the top House Democrat.
Democrats are reportedly preparing a 100-day agenda focused on lowering the cost of living and increasing oversight of the Republican administration, which Jeffries has characterized as holding "crooks accountable."
"What we’ve seen is he is quietly effective," said Rep. Brad Schneider of Illinois, outgoing chairman of the centrist New Democrat Coalition. "Rather than chasing rabbits, what Leader Jeffries has kept the caucus doing is focused on accomplishment, success and a plan for our future."
First elected to Congress in 2012, Jeffries has steadily risen through the party ranks. He is seen as a bridge between older, established figures like Pelosi and the younger progressive wing, exemplified by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Jeffries' background includes corporate law and a childhood rooted in faith and community service. He has often spoken about his upbringing in Brooklyn and the influence of his parents, a counselor and a social worker. He has drawn parallels between his personal journey and the lyrics of hip-hop artists, citing The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Sky’s the Limit" as an inspiration for overcoming adversity.
He has been critical of Republican legislative priorities, including tax breaks and spending cuts. During debate on a Republican bill, Jeffries delivered an eight-hour speech highlighting potential cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP.
Democrats have also used procedural tactics to force votes on issues such as the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and halting military action in Iran. In one instance, Democrats opposed to Republican funding proposals led a government shutdown over the Affordable Care Act's health insurance tax credits.
Jeffries has acknowledged the challenges ahead, including navigating a potentially narrow House majority and dealing with a diverse range of voices within the Democratic party. He has stated that a shared understanding of the country's "broken" systems and the need for "transformational" change on affordability will unite House Democrats.
The new Congress convenes on January 3, when the House Speaker will be elected.
