Haitian Mayor Known for Defending Kenscoff Dies

Jean Massillon, the mayor of Kenscoff, Haiti, a community that has faced significant gang violence, has died. The death was confirmed by Deputy Mayor Jean Max Duvivier to radio station Métropole Haiti, with officials stating it was due to health-related issues.

Massillon was recognized for his efforts to protect the residents of Kenscoff, a farming community located in the hills above the capital, Port-au-Prince. He frequently appealed to the government for increased security and used local radio to highlight the challenges faced by his constituents.

Haiti's government issued a statement acknowledging Massillon's dedication, noting that he "never shied away from his responsibilities" and remained present with his community despite escalating insecurity. The statement further recognized his commitment, stating he "chose to remain present alongside his community and to make his voice heard so that Kenscoff would never be abandoned."

Kenscoff has recently been the site of violent attacks, including two massacres in July and August that resulted in at least 164 deaths, over 70 kidnappings, and dozens of missing persons. These incidents led to the displacement of approximately 10,000 people.

A report by a Haitian human rights group suggested that timely security reinforcements could have prevented or mitigated the impact of these killings. Earlier this week, Massillon had asked those displaced by the violence for patience while emphasizing the need for community security.

He also commended Haitian police officers for their courage and determination, noting that several communities had returned to government control. The Haitian government stated that Massillon's death "leaves a deep void within his family and the community he served with such dedication."
