Haiti Extradites 18 Suspects to US for President Moise Assassination Trial
Extradited individuals include ex-soldiers and a former government official, facing charges in Florida for their alleged roles in the 2021 killing.
Eighteen individuals have been extradited from Haiti to Florida to face trial in the United States for their alleged involvement in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise. The suspects, who arrived in the U.S. state on Sunday, include 17 former Colombian soldiers and Joseph Badio, a former official within Haiti's justice ministry who worked in an anti-corruption unit.
Moise was assassinated in his Port-au-Prince residence in July 2021. U.S. prosecutors allege that the planning and financing of the killing were orchestrated from Florida, as well as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The FBI stated that the arrests and extraditions underscore a commitment to bringing all participants in the plot to justice.
US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Jason Reding Quiñones, described the extradition as "the next major phase in our pursuit of accountability" for the presidential assassination. He noted that 30 suspects have been indicted so far and that investigations continue, stating, "we are not finished."
A Miami-based security firm is accused of playing a significant role in hiring the former Colombian soldiers. Some of the extradited individuals, identified as former Colombian soldiers, have claimed they were mercenaries who believed they were participating in a coup but were unaware of the plan to murder Moise.
This development comes as Haiti continues to grapple with widespread gang violence and lawlessness, conditions that have previously stalled Haitian investigations into the assassination. The dire state of Haiti's justice system has placed the onus on U.S. prosecutors to try the cases.
Four individuals were previously convicted in a Miami court in May for their roles in the conspiracy. The charges against those facing trial include conspiracy to kill or kidnap Moise and conspiracy to provide material support in connection with the killing. If convicted, they face possible life sentences in prison.
The assassination of the 53-year-old president shocked the Caribbean nation, highlighting its vulnerability. Since Moise's death, Haiti has been engulfed in a wave of gang violence, with the UN Integrated Office in Haiti reporting at least 1,408 deaths and 656 injuries between April and June of the current year.
