Hailey Bieber Faces Criticism for Anti-Overconsumption Remarks Amidst Brand's Expansion

Hailey Bieber has ignited a debate about consumerism and brand ethics after expressing her disinterest in "overconsumption" within the beauty industry. The comments, made during a discussion at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit, have led to a wave of criticism on social media, with many pointing to the expansive product line and packaging of her own beauty brand, Rhode.

Bieber, who launched Rhode in 2022, stated at the summit that her brand's ethos was rooted in offering a curated selection of essential, high-quality items. "I really am not interested in overconsumption," she said. "I think the beauty space is very, very filled as it is, and the whole ethos of Rhode from the beginning was this idea of one of each thing done really well."

She elaborated that the brand focuses on creating products she personally uses and travels with, emphasizing a desire for "on the go stuff" that forms part of her daily routine. Bieber also noted that for her, the brand is not primarily about financial gain, stating, "This isn't like about money for me." She acknowledged the privilege of having a large platform when building a business.

However, these statements quickly drew sharp reactions online. Critics highlighted Rhode's product offerings, such as plastic cases for pimple patches and phone cases with built-in lip gloss holders, as examples of the very overconsumption Bieber claimed to reject. "Frequent private jet user Hailey Bieber claims she’s not interested in overconsumption... Despite having launched products like a bikini lip gloss holder," one user commented on social media.

Another critic pointed out the apparent contradiction: "'I'm not interested in overconsumption' girl then explain this," in reference to Rhode's lip gloss phone cases. Others questioned the brand's commitment to sustainability, noting merchandise that contributes to waste. The brand's own website features a commitment to "reduction of overconsumption and the inclusion of our community in the process."

Rhode, which started with three initial products, has since expanded significantly. Last year, the brand was acquired by E.l.f. Cosmetics in a deal reportedly valued at $1 billion, with Bieber taking on the role of Chief Creative Officer and Head of Innovation.

Despite the backlash, Bieber maintained that she entered the business with awareness of potential consumer fatigue with celebrity brands. She expressed a hope that Rhode's authenticity and her genuine connection to the products would resonate with consumers, who she believes are increasingly discerning and resistant to inauthentic marketing.

"I think people, the consumer today, is just so smart. They're so, so, so smart. They don't care about the BS. They see through it all," Bieber stated. "They really want to feel something that's real to someone and authentic, and then feel that you care about it in a real way."
