Hacking Prodigy Arrested for Alleged Antisemitic Graffiti Spree

Kristoffer Wilheim Vonhassel, 18, was arrested Tuesday and booked on 12 suspected offenses related to vandalism in Imperial Beach, California. Six of these charges allege property damage motivated by civil-rights violations, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest follows an investigation into graffiti found on homes in Imperial Beach on Sept. 13 and again six days later in an alley behind an Elm Avenue residence. Authorities stated that surveillance footage helped identify Vonhassel as the suspect. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of a handheld electronic device capable of analyzing wireless signals used by access systems, identified by his mother as a Flipper Zero.

Vonhassel's parents are contesting the allegations, denying any hateful or antisemitic beliefs on the part of their son or themselves. "We'll be fighting this case," his mother told the San Diego Union-Tribune, expressing concern for her son's future and requesting anonymity due to fears of family targeting. His father noted that Vonhassel had never been in trouble before, recalling his early technological achievements.

In 2014, Vonhassel gained international attention at the age of 5 when he discovered a method to bypass a password on his father's Xbox One. This discovery led Microsoft to recognize him as a "Security Researcher," rewarding him with games, an Xbox Live subscription, and $50. CNN at the time dubbed him a "boy genius."
