As the seasons shift, H&M HOME is introducing its autumn collection, featuring a new collaboration with American designer Kelly Wearstler. Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg, H&M HOME's Head of Design & Creative, suggests strategic updates to home decor can impart a more sophisticated feel without a complete overhaul.
Kravaev-Söderberg emphasizes the impact of carefully chosen details, advising a focus on lighting, decorative accents, and materials that introduce warmth and character. "There are easy and effective elements you can add to a room to instantly transform its look and feel," she stated. "From our new Kelly Wearstler H&M HOME collection and autumn collection, we have pieces spanning lighting, decorative accents and more, designed to bring warmth, character and a considered finish to any space."
Strategic Decor Swaps
Instead of filling shelves with generic ornaments, Kravaev-Söderberg recommends selecting a single design-led statement piece, such as a domino set, to add playful character. "turning an everyday object into a considered decorative detail," she noted.
Layered lighting is presented as a key element for altering a room's atmosphere. The advice is to move beyond relying solely on overhead lighting and instead incorporate a sculptural table lamp. This approach, according to Kravaev-Söderberg, is "an effortless way to introduce a sense of luxury to the living space" due to its form and materiality.
To manage coffee table clutter, a decorative tray is suggested as a way to organize items. A tray combining marble with geometric detailing can create "a considered centrepiece" and a more intentional arrangement.
For a warmer ambiance, particularly when entertaining, grouping candlesticks of varying heights is recommended over a single statement candle. This arrangement is said to "instantly warm any tablescape" and create "a sensorial atmosphere."
Rather than stacking books solely for decorative purposes, the use of a book stand is proposed to highlight a favorite volume. Kravaev-Söderberg describes such stands as having an "effortless quality" that is "sculptural enough to stand alone, but practical too," making them suitable even for smaller spaces.
Awkward corners can be transformed into features with the addition of a floor lamp. Kravaev-Söderberg favors lighting with a decorative and timeless feel, noting that a lamp with a "sculptural silhouette" can "instantly bring character to a space."
In bedrooms, the trend shifts from overly styled bedding to simpler patterns like checks. Kravaev-Söderberg admires the "understated Scandi feel" of checked duvet sets, which provide a "polished, quiet-luxury feel without ever looking too styled."
The overarching lesson from the collection's design direction is that achieving a more expensive look does not require increased spending, but rather a more thoughtful selection of fewer, well-chosen items.
