Trewley Precious, a 26-year-old influencer known online as the ‘ultimate Gypsy influencer,’ is challenging conventional narratives surrounding social media fame and her upbringing.
Precious, who has amassed nearly one million followers on TikTok, uses her platform to share an unfiltered glimpse into her life on the Percy King estate in Clacton-on-Sea, an area once described as ‘worse than prison.’ Unlike many influencers who might use their first significant earnings for personal luxuries, Precious states she has used her income to provide food for her neighbors on the estate. She aspires to partner with brands like Poundland and Aldi, reflecting her audience's shopping habits rather than high-end retailers.
Her ambition extends beyond personal success; Precious dreams of purchasing the entire estate and renaming it ‘Precious Road’ to enact positive change. "I want to change all that. If I could save all the children now, definitely," she said.
Precious’s journey into social media began at age 17, inspired by figures like Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson. She acknowledges the societal expectations within her community, where women are traditionally expected to be mothers and housewives rather than public figures. Precious, whose father was Gypsy and mother is non-Gypsy, has found a way to balance her online persona with her roots, despite the challenges and unspoken rules within her community, which she states include restrictions on piercings, tattoos, and curfews.
Her family remains central to her life, especially after the passing of her father three years ago. Her mother has begun accompanying her to events, and Precious is determined to provide her mother with opportunities she never had. Precious is also focused on her own future family, aiming to be a present and happy mother, a path she acknowledges differs from the tradition of marrying young within her community.
Precious has also commented on the public perception of young marriages within the Gypsy community, referencing the marriage of Venezuela Fury, daughter of boxer Tyson Fury. While acknowledging the success of families like the Furies, Precious emphasizes that her own achievements are the result of her own hard work, not inherited wealth or fame. She aims to represent and inspire individuals from similar backgrounds, demonstrating that success is achievable without compromising one's identity or resorting to illicit activities. "I want girls from deprived areas to be like, ‘Oh wow, I don’t have to sell drugs to get out of it. I don’t have to live a certain way,’" she stated.
Precious’s unfiltered approach to content creation, which includes sharing everyday moments like eating 69p baked beans for breakfast or going to the shop in her dressing gown, resonates with her audience. She sees herself as a representative for girls who may not see themselves reflected in mainstream media, embracing various aspects of her identity, from being a “council estate girl” to a “chubby girl” and a “glam girl.”
Her participation in the Channel 4 show 'The Secret Lives of Gypsy Wives' offers viewers a fly-on-the-wall perspective, which she humorously describes as "like the Kardashians if they were broke... fat and on benefits!" Precious remains committed to her community and her authentic self, striving for a future that offers more than the limited options she perceives for those who remain on the estate without seeking change.
