Gwyneth Paltrow has responded to public criticism regarding an alleged dinner party she was to host for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Reports of the invitation surfaced Thursday, prompting Paltrow to share a series of playful, altered invitations on her Instagram account.
The original alleged invitation, published by the Puck newsletter, stated the event was "in honor of Sam Altman." Paltrow's shared versions, however, featured fictional characters such as the AI doll M3GAN, Samantha Jones from "Sex and the City," Shrek, Jessica Rabbit, and a character named Chanty Beluga.
Paltrow captioned her Instagram post with "We’re serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request," a detail seemingly referencing the elaborate and sometimes unconventional culinary descriptions associated with her lifestyle brand, Goop.
The posts led to speculation among her followers about whether the dinner for Altman, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, would still take place as reported. The event was reportedly scheduled for August 29 at Paltrow's Amagansett, New York, home, with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner to follow.
News of the dinner had previously drawn criticism online, with some social media users expressing disappointment and calling Paltrow's reported actions "disappointing" and "unacceptable." Some comments suggested the response was a PR misstep.
Paltrow's representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment. This is not the first time Paltrow has faced public scrutiny for promotional activities. In June, she was criticized for appearing in a commercial for luxury properties located in an Israeli city approximately 50 miles from the Gaza Strip. At the time, a source told Page Six that Paltrow was "taken aback" by the backlash, though she did not publicly address the controversy. Livia Giuggioli, the ex-wife of actor Colin Firth, publicly criticized Paltrow for the advertisement, questioning her detachment or intelligence.
