Gunman Opens Fire on Co-workers at South LA Senior Home, Injuring Three
Surveillance video captured the moment a man identified as Darryl Arnette Barnes allegedly fired a handgun at colleagues before being arrested at the facility.
Surveillance video recorded the moment a suspected gunman opened fire on co-workers at the Progressive Home for the Elderly in South Los Angeles on Monday, injuring three people. The footage shows Darryl Arnette Barnes, 60, who worked as a maintenance man at the facility, allegedly firing a handgun at his colleagues.
Before the shooting, Barnes reportedly said, “I’m tired of this.”
In the video, Barnes appears to draw the weapon from a shopping cart before firing. The footage then shows him on the other side of a counter, firing additional shots. One person is seen diving over the counter in an attempt to escape.
Three people were hospitalized as a result of the incident. One victim was in critical condition, while the other two were listed as stable. The Los Angeles Police Department identified the victims as a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 60s, and a man in his 60s. Their names have not been released.
According to LAPD Capt. Mike Bland, all of the victims, including the suspect, are believed to be employees of the facility. Bland stated that the shooting occurred in the lobby of the building, and the suspect was located inside by first responders.
Officers arrested Barnes without incident within the Progressive Home for the Elderly. The facility, which serves low-income seniors, houses approximately 100 residents across multiple stories.
Barnes has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and is being held on $4 million bail. He faces a potential life sentence if convicted.
Pastor Jason Malveaux of the Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church, which is associated with the living facility, commented on the incident, telling KTLA, “My biggest prayer is that we figure out a way to have peace with one another. It doesn’t have to always escalate to hot tempers.”
