Gunman Kills Eight, Including Pregnant Woman and Children, in Erie Standoff

A gunman killed eight people, including a pregnant woman and two children, before dying by apparent suicide during a SWAT standoff in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the incident as one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes officers have encountered in their careers.

Authorities responded to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of Perry Street after residents called 911, hearing gunfire and seeing a man with a handgun. Upon arrival, police discovered two women deceased in the street, one of whom was pregnant. The suspect then barricaded himself inside a nearby home.

Erie Police Department officers and SWAT members surrounded the residence and repeatedly ordered the individual inside to surrender. During the standoff, additional gunfire was heard, initially raising fears for others' safety. Authorities later clarified that the sounds were from flash bangs used by law enforcement.

Lorah, who has over 28 years of law enforcement experience, stated he had not witnessed anything comparable in his career, adding that the city of Erie had likely never seen such devastation. Mayor Daria Devlin characterized the event as a terrible tragedy and assured residents that the situation was contained.

All eight victims were deceased before law enforcement arrived. The identities and ages of the deceased, as well as their relationship to the shooter or each other, have not yet been released.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences and offered full support to Erie in the wake of the mass shooting, calling it tragic.

Authorities were scheduled to provide further updates at a press conference later on Saturday afternoon.
