Guardiola to Return to Manchester City Amidst Financial Rule Breach Verdict
Former manager Pep Guardiola plans to attend the upcoming Champions League match against PSG, signaling support for the club following a significant verdict on financial regulations.
Pep Guardiola is set to make his first return to Manchester City since his summer departure to attend the club's Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain next week. This visit comes in the wake of a verdict finding the Premier League club guilty of numerous charges related to financial rule breaches.
Guardiola, who is expected to be joined by the City board including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, will be at the Etihad Stadium for the European match. Sources indicated that Guardiola's attendance was confirmed after initial uncertainty, reflecting a decision to support the club following the release of the independent commission's findings.
Manel Estiarte, Guardiola's long-time associate who performs consultancy work for City Football Group, is also anticipated to be present. The club has initiated an appeal against the verdict, which included accusations of artificially inflating commercial revenues by an estimated £830 million through purported 'sham' contracts with Abu Dhabi-based companies.
The potential sanctions for the breaches range from title revocations and points deductions to fines or expulsion from the league.
Guardiola publicly backed Manchester City the day after the verdict was announced. In a statement, he expressed unwavering support for the club, its ownership, chairman, executives, players, staff, and supporters. "I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever," Guardiola stated. "I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran (Soriano), the players, staff, Enzo (Maresca) and you, our unique supporters. Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all."
His decision to visit the Etihad so soon after leaving is viewed as a significant gesture. Guardiola maintains a close relationship with Enzo Maresca, his former assistant during the club's Treble-winning season, and continues his role as a City ambassador.
Maresca's squad is scheduled to resume full training on Thursday before their upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
