Grizzly Mother Defends Cubs in Dramatic Alaskan Showdown
Photographer captures intense encounter between a mother bear protecting her cubs and an intruding grizzly in Lake Clark National Park.
In a striking display of maternal protection, two grizzly bears engaged in a fierce battle in the waters of Alaska's Lake Clark National Park. The dramatic encounter was captured by Baltimore-based photographer Scott Suriano.
The images depict a mother grizzly fishing with her two cubs when another bear approached too closely. In response, the mother bear charged, rearing up and roaring with her teeth and claws bared.
Faced with the aggressive defense, the intruding bear retreated to find a less crowded fishing spot.
"This was definitely one of my top wildlife photographic experiences," Suriano stated. "I felt so grateful as well as humbled to have witnessed such a powerful display of wild maternal protection."
Grizzly bears, also known as North American brown bears, are formidable animals. They can weigh up to 900 pounds, stand as tall as 8 feet, and reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. Their sense of smell is exceptionally acute, reportedly up to 2,000 times stronger than a human's, enabling them to detect food from significant distances.
