Grizzly Mother Defends Cubs in Alaskan Waters
Photographer captures dramatic confrontation between mother bear and intruder.
Two grizzly bears engaged in a dramatic battle in the waters of Alaska's Lake Clark National Park, a confrontation captured by photographer Scott Suriano. The images show a mother grizzly fishing with her cubs when another bear approached too closely.
The mother bear reacted swiftly, charging through the water towards the intruder. She reared up, roaring and displaying her teeth and claws in a clear warning. The intruding bear, apparently intimidated, retreated to a less crowded area to fish.
Suriano, a photographer based in Baltimore, described the experience as one of his top wildlife photographic moments, expressing gratitude and humility for witnessing the display of maternal protection. "I felt so grateful as well as humbled to have witnessed such a powerful display of wild maternal protection," he stated.
Grizzly bears, also known as North American brown bears, are formidable animals. They can weigh up to 900 pounds, stand up to 8 feet tall, and reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. Their sense of smell is also exceptionally acute, estimated to be up to 2,000 times stronger than a human's, enabling them to detect food from significant distances.
