Grisham's Slump and Yankees' Early Exit

Trent Grisham was placed in the leadoff spot with the hope of generating more baserunners for the Yankees' offense. However, his struggles at the plate mirrored the team's disappointing end to the season, culminating in a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Despite being the worst-performing leadoff hitter in the majors this season among qualified players, with a .199 batting average and .680 OPS, Grisham was given the start at the top of the lineup. His performance in the elimination game was a continuation of his season-long difficulties. Grisham struck out in the first inning, again in the third, lined out in the fifth, and faced boos from the home crowd after a strikeout in the seventh. His final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on second and two outs, resulted in a strikeout against lefty closer Bryan Baker, sealing the Yankees' defeat.

The decision to bat Grisham leadoff was partly influenced by his previous success against Rays' starter Nick Martinez. Entering the game, Grisham had a favorable history against Martinez, going 4-for-6 with three doubles and two walks.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the strategic reasoning behind the lineup choice. "Just trying to find somewhere we can get some on base, especially in front of [Rice], as well as he’s playing right now and maximize that as much as we can," Boone said before Game 3. "I considered a lot of different avenues and settled on that."

Outside of Ben Rice, the Yankees' offense struggled to gain momentum in the series after a strong showing in the wild-card round against the Red Sox. Grisham had previously hit leadoff in the postseason the year before, but his offensive production declined significantly during the regular season. This led to him batting seventh in his previous three playoff starts.

With his contract status uncertain following the season and his performance on a qualifying offer, Grisham's role with the Yankees is in question. The team activated him for the playoffs despite him missing significant time late in the season due to a strained right hamstring. The hope was that he would regain his timing and rhythm, but that did not materialize in the ALDS.
