Grieving Mother Links Son's Death to Immigration System Chaos
A mother recounts the tragic death of her newlywed son and daughter-in-law, caused by an undocumented immigrant, and criticizes current immigration policies.
A mother is speaking out about the death of her son and his wife, who were killed in a car crash allegedly caused by an undocumented immigrant who had entered the U.S. illegally. The incident has become a focal point for her criticism of the current immigration system and its perceived failures.
Billy and Jenny, married for just 16 days, were driving back to their home in Springfield, Oregon, on the night of November 24, 2025, when their vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler truck that had jack-knifed across the highway. The truck, driven by Rajinder Kumar, was reportedly blocking both lanes of traffic in the darkness, with no hazard lights or warning signs displayed. It was not until approximately 10 to 15 minutes later that another driver called 911.
Billy, 25, and Jenny, 24, died at the scene. Their parents, who had been tracking their location, learned of the accident after noticing their vehicle had stopped moving and then contacting authorities.
Police reports later indicated that Kumar, an illegal immigrant, possessed a non-domiciled Commercial Driver's License (CDL) from California and work authorization. According to the notes, he did not follow proper protocol by failing to notify authorities about the blockage or use warning equipment. It was also revealed that he did not speak English, a federal requirement for holding a CDL. Kumar was arrested and initially charged with criminally negligent homicide, with charges later elevated to manslaughter in the first degree. He pleaded not guilty.
The grieving mother, a lifelong Democrat, stated that her son's death has led her to question her political beliefs and highlighted what she described as the "untenable chaos of allowing millions of undocumented people in under President Biden." She noted that Kumar had entered the country illegally in 2022 and was released by the Biden administration with a work permit, while California Governor Gavin Newsom's administration issued him a CDL.
Kumar was released on bail on April 2, aided by Oregon's sanctuary state policies. He was arrested by ICE 20 days later but has since returned to Deschutes County Jail. Despite a standing deportation order to India, his case is subject to hearings that could grant him further release before his criminal trial scheduled for January 19, 2027. The mother expressed concern that he might be deported before the trial, complicating legal proceedings.
She recounted a brief encounter with Kumar before a bail hearing, where she told him she prayed for him and his family, acknowledging that he likely did not intend to destroy lives. However, she also voiced lingering questions about his decisions that night and worries that fear of immigration status or language barriers might prevent others in similar situations from calling for help after an accident.
Testifying before Congress earlier this year, the mother expressed shame at her party's handling of immigration, criticizing what she perceived as apathy and a lack of accountability. She shared an anecdote about Representative Jerry Nadler appearing to fall asleep during her testimony, which she felt exemplified the passivity she has encountered from elected officials.
The mother concluded by reflecting on the life she believes her son and daughter-in-law were denied, lamenting that she had to plan their funeral instead of anticipating future grandchildren. She expressed a hope that elected officials would set aside party politics to address immigration reform, emphasizing that such tragedies should not be necessary to spur action.
