Grey Hair Embraced by Celebrities, Experts Say It Can Make Women Look Younger

The natural aging process, long a complex subject in Hollywood, is increasingly being embraced by public figures, with many actresses now choosing to showcase their grey hair. This shift is being hailed by some as a path to looking younger and more authentic. Celebrities like Olivia Colman, Andie MacDowell, and Jane Fonda have recently been seen sporting their natural silver locks, signaling a change in beauty standards and perceptions of aging.

Olivia Colman, 52, recently debuted a salt-and-pepper hairstyle at the Zurich Film Festival, moving away from her signature brunette pixie cut. This choice has been met with praise, with stylists noting how the natural grey can appear sophisticated and modern. "We’re seeing more women embrace their natural colour, and Olivia shows just how sophisticated and modern it can look," said Callum Ashely Townsend, a curl and textured hair stylist. He added that embracing grey can look "effortlessly elegant."

Neville Tucker, a stylist who has worked with Queen Elizabeth and Queen Camilla, commented that Colman's new length and silver streaks have made her appear years younger.

The trend is not limited to screen stars. The Instagram account Grombre, dedicated to celebrating natural grey hair, has amassed a significant following, indicating a broader cultural embrace of this natural phenomenon.

Veteran actress Helen Mirren, 81, has been a proponent of embracing grey hair since around 2010. She previously described dyeing her hair as "boring and expensive" and praised other women who have made the transition, stating they look "spectacular."

Sarah Jessica Parker, 61, has openly expressed frustration with constant commentary on her grey hair. While promoting "And Just Like That," she told Vogue, “Gray hair, gray hair, gray hair. Does she have gray hair? I don’t know what to tell you, people.” She suggested that there might be an expectation for women to appear dissatisfied with their natural aging process.

Elizabeth McGovern, 65, has also challenged the media's focus on women's aging. She noted in an interview that questions about plastic surgery or grey hair are rarely posed to men, highlighting a double standard.

Andie MacDowell, 68, has been a vocal advocate for aging gracefully and has been wearing her natural silver hair since the pandemic, first showcasing it at the Cannes Film Festival in July 2021. She told Vogue in 2021, “Once I did it, it was just so clear to me that my instincts were right, because I’ve never felt more powerful. I feel more honest. I feel like I’m not pretending. Jamie Lee Curtis, 67, has long favored a pixie cut, which she feels gives her the freedom to forgo makeup and feel confident. She has experimented with different hair colors but has often returned to her preferred style.

Emma Thompson, 63, has embraced a multi-tonal approach with "greige lights," blending grey and beige highlights as her hair transitioned. She has spoken about the misrepresentation of the aging female body on screen.

Jane Fonda, 88, another L'Oreal Paris Brand Ambassador, stopped dyeing her hair during the pandemic. She debuted her silver hair at the Oscars in 2022, a look that required significant effort from her colorist to achieve the desired tone.
