Greggs' Menu Under Scrutiny: Nutritionist Reveals Healthiest Lunch Options Amidst Profit Drop

Greggs, a prominent bakery chain, is facing financial headwinds, with reports indicating a 17.9% drop in profits last year and significantly lower growth than anticipated. Factors contributing to this downturn include the cost of living crisis, the popularity of weight loss injections, and a growing consumer interest in healthier lunchtime alternatives.

In response to evolving consumer demands, Greggs has introduced a range of lower-calorie, protein-rich snacks, salads, and low-sugar beverages. Despite the chain's reputation for indulgent pastries, nutritionist Rob Hobson has identified several menu items that can be considered healthier options.

Savory Selections

For those seeking a savory pastry, Hobson suggests the Sausage, Bean & Cheese Melt. While high in calories (456 per bake), it offers 4g of fiber, comparable to two slices of wholemeal bread, and a lower salt content than traditional sausage rolls. However, he advises caution regarding saturated fat intake, as one melt contains 70% of an adult's daily recommended limit.

The Mexican Chicken Flatbread is highlighted as a strong choice, boasting 24g of protein and relatively low levels of saturated fat (1g) and salt (1.1g) per serving. It also includes salad leaves and mixed peppers, contributing to fiber intake.

Southern Fried Chicken Goujons (400 calories per 160g box) are noted for their high protein content, offering 27g per portion, which is roughly equivalent to four and a half eggs. Hobson recommends pairing these with fruit rather than potato wedges to maintain a lower calorie count and boost fiber.

Lighter Bites

The Tuna Crunch Baguette stands out with 26g of protein for 413 calories and a minimal 0.7g of saturated fat. While the sugar content is noted, some of it is naturally occurring in the added vegetables. Hobson suggests adding more vegetables for increased fiber.

For a lower-calorie option, the Prawn Layered Pasta Salad (339 calories per salad) offers a balance of protein (12g) and slow-releasing carbohydrates from the pasta. It also includes vegetables and provides a good source of Vitamin B12. To increase protein, pairing it with a yogurt or hard-boiled egg is recommended.

The Tomato Soup (195 calories per portion) is presented as a low-calorie option that can boost vegetable intake. However, for a more satisfying meal, Hobson recommends pairing it with a sandwich, such as Greggs' Egg Mayo sandwich, which is noted as having fewer calories and less fat than similar offerings from other high street brands.

Considerations

While Greggs has made efforts to cater to health-conscious consumers, many of its traditional offerings, such as sausage rolls, are high in calories and saturated fat. A standard sausage roll contains approximately 350 calories and a significant portion of the daily recommended saturated fat limit, offering only 9g of protein, which may not sustain satiety.

Hobson's advice emphasizes that even with healthier choices, it's important to consider the overall daily intake of nutrients like salt and saturated fat. Pairing items strategically, such as the soup with a sandwich or goujons with fruit, can help create a more balanced meal.
