Gregg Popovich Marries Ex-Wife of Former Assistant Coach Mike Budenholzer
The five-time NBA champion coach tied the knot with Mary Barth Budenholzer on September 16.
Gregg Popovich, the longtime head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, has married Mary Barth Budenholzer, the former wife of his ex-assistant coach Mike Budenholzer. The wedding took place on September 16 in Texas, according to a marriage license obtained by TMZ.
Mary Barth Budenholzer was previously married to Mike Budenholzer, who served as an assistant coach under Popovich with the Spurs for nearly two decades, from 1996 to 2013. During their tenure together, the Spurs won four NBA championships. Following his time in San Antonio, Mike Budenholzer went on to coach the Atlanta Hawks.
Mike and Mary Budenholzer divorced in 2016 and share four children. Popovich's first wife, Erin, passed away in 2018 after a prolonged illness. The couple had been married for 41 years and had two children.
Popovich, 77, stepped down from coaching the Spurs in 2025 due to health issues, including a mild stroke suffered in November 2024. He is the NBA's all-time leader in coaching wins with 1,390 victories. He now serves as the Spurs' president of basketball operations.
Mike Budenholzer, 57, has also remarried and publicly thanked his partner, Lisa, during his introductory press conference as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns in May 2024. Budenholzer has a successful coaching career, including an NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021 and two NBA Coach of the Year awards.
