Greg Newsome II Urges Giants Fans for Support Amidst Team's Early Season

New York Giants cornerback Greg Newsome II is appealing to the team's fanbase to remain steadfast in their support, emphasizing his belief in the team's potential despite an early season record of 1-1. In a Q&A with columnist Steve Serby, Newsome II stated that the team is on a path to achieve great things and that the best version of himself will be on display this season.

"Stay with us," Newsome II urged Giants fans. "Obviously we’re 1–1, but this team is going to do a lot of great things. So just continue to show up for us, we’re going to put on for you guys, and it’s going to be a great season."

Newsome II described the team's mentality following the injury to quarterback Jaxson Dart as one of positivity and a focus on moving forward. He highlighted the confidence of head coach John Harbaugh and the team's self-belief, stating, "We know what we have in this building. We got a bunch of elite players. We got a great team. We got great leaders, and we’ll be ready to go."

Reflecting on his career and his move to the Giants, Newsome II expressed excitement about being in a scheme that fits him and a place where he feels wanted. He believes his best football is still ahead of him and is eager to prove himself, aiming to "retire a Giant."

"I think that’s what I was made for," Newsome II said about playing in a large market like New York. "Playing in Cleveland, I love the city of Cleveland, they know that, but it’s just a small market. You don’t get to be out there in the spotlight too much, and I feel like now at this point in my career that I deserve to be in a market like this to just be able to show my talent."

He characterized the team's approach as playing with a "dawg" mentality, defining it as someone willing to win at any cost. Newsome II feels that the general manager and coaching staff have assembled a group of players with similar traits and a shared drive to win.

"A dawg is somebody that’s trying to win at all costs, at any cost," he explained. "Joe [Schoen] the GM, and freakin’ Harbs [coach John Harbaugh] and everybody, I feel like they brought all of us here together for a reason. We all have similar traits, similar personalities — guys that want to win at all costs no matter what it takes."

Regarding his own play, Newsome II considers himself a lockdown cornerback, particularly when playing man coverage. He believes in his ability to be "sticky in coverage" and compete on every play. He also discussed his interactions with receivers, admitting to trash-talking, though often indirectly.

Newsome II also shared insights into his teammates, praising Jameis Winston's leadership as a "pro's pro" and expressing confidence in his ability to lead the team. He described head coach John Harbaugh as a player's coach who also holds everyone accountable, including the star players, which he sees as crucial for team success.

His personal motivations extend beyond football, citing his Christian faith and his family as primary drivers. He also reflected on his past as a lower-ranked recruit and how being overlooked fueled his determination.

"Being a kid from Chicago … first of all, they didn’t think football was really serious, so was a lower three-star recruit, went to IMG Academy to prove myself," Newsome II recalled. "That was just something growing up all the time, overlooked, even when I chose to go to Northwestern."

Newsome II concluded by emphasizing the importance of fan support, drawing a parallel to the excitement surrounding the New York Knicks' past championship run, and expressing his commitment to the Giants organization.
