Greg Lynn Denied Bail in High Country Murder Case
Former Jetstar pilot will remain in custody until his May trial for the murders of Carol Clay and Russell Hill.
Former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn, 59, has been denied bail and will remain in custody until his murder trial in May. The Supreme Court of Victoria on Tuesday refused his latest bid for release.
Lynn is charged with the murders of Carol Clay, 73, and Russell Hill, 74, who disappeared from a remote campsite in Victoria's northeast in March 2020. Lynn was arrested in November 2021. His legal team had proposed he live with his eldest son, Geordie Lynn, in Melbourne, with Geordie offering his life savings as a financial surety. Lynn had also stated he would comply with any bail conditions.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Gibson had opposed bail, arguing that Lynn failed to meet the threshold of "exceptional circumstances" required under Victorian law for those facing murder charges.
Lynn's bail application hearing last week included his testimony about his experiences in prison. He claimed he was subjected to a "disgusting attack" involving feces and bodily fluids thrown at him by another inmate. Lynn stated he reported the incident, after which he was placed in solitary confinement for a week, despite being the victim.
He also described concerns about being targeted by other inmates, whom he believed might be police informants. Lynn recounted an altercation where he was threatened and spat upon after referring to another prisoner as an informant. He stated he was worried prisoners might fabricate accusations against him.
Prosecutor Gibson argued that Lynn's restrictive prison conditions, including lockdowns, were largely a result of his own behavior and his fixation on informants, rather than unavoidable hardship imposed by the system. Gibson contended that these circumstances did not justify bail, despite Lynn's presumption of innocence. Lynn maintained he was the victim in the prison incidents and called suggestions he orchestrated an assault on himself "ridiculous."
