Greg James Misses Radio 1 Show After Night Out, Addresses Absence
The BBC Radio 1 presenter explained his absence from the Breakfast Show on Instagram after attending a concert.
Greg James, host of the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, missed his regular slot on Tuesday following a night out with friends. James addressed his absence in an Instagram statement, assuring listeners it was a "sanctioned day off" and that he had not overslept.
He explained that he had traveled to Manchester to see his friend and attend a concert by the band The Strokes. James mentioned he was still resting while his statement was posted, humorously calling himself a "pathetic loser." He added that he had caught up on recent events, including news about Harry Kane's goals, and promised to return to his usual broadcast on Wednesday. He also gave a shout-out to the fill-in hosts, Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston.
This situation comes shortly after James's wife, author Bella Mackie, shared her experiences with online trolls. Mackie, 43, revealed that she had been deeply affected by comments suggesting she was preventing her husband from having children. The couple, married since 2018, spent eight years discussing whether to start a family. Mackie stated that while she had always assumed she would become a mother, she and James ultimately concluded they were "not sure they wanted a child enough."
Mackie recounted the emotional toll these comments took, describing them as "crushing" and causing significant "upset and anger." She expressed frustration with people making assumptions about her personal decisions regarding children and her mental health. She cited anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as factors that made her hesitant about motherhood, worrying about how these conditions might impact her ability to parent and exacerbate during pregnancy and postpartum.
Mackie also touched upon what she perceives as "weird sexism" surrounding the decision not to have children, noting that if a man like James expresses a desire not to be a father, people are less likely to believe him.
