Greenland's government is asking cruise operators to reduce or avoid sailing through certain fjords, scenic waterways bordered by steep terrain. The recommendation, issued by Naalakkersuisut, follows concerns raised by residents regarding the impact of increased cruise ship traffic on local communities and the environment.

Residents have expressed concerns about noise pollution, the disruption of wildlife, and the preservation of natural areas used for recreation, hunting, and fishing. The government stated that the recommendation aims to minimize the impact on vulnerable ecosystems and wildlife while respecting the local population's wishes to maintain the recreational value of these areas and their traditional subsistence activities.

Naalakkersuisut is urging cruise lines, ship captains, and the broader maritime industry to consider local conditions when planning itineraries and to adhere to the new guidance. While currently a recommendation, the government is developing more formal restrictions through zoning rules under the Tourism Act. These rules will define areas open to cruise tourism and those that will face limitations, with input from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders, following a public consultation period.

Greenland has seen a rise in both expedition and larger passenger ships visiting during its summer cruise season. Popular destinations include Qaqortoq and Nanortalik, with numerous cruise calls scheduled. Major cruise brands such as Carnival, Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn, AIDA, Viking, Windstar, Explora, Holland America, Celebrity, and Virgin are among those visiting Greenlandic ports this season.

Discussions among travelers online reflect a mixed perspective on cruising in Greenland. Some acknowledge the environmental impact and waste associated with cruise vessels, while others highlight the accessibility and convenience of cruises for experiencing remote destinations like Greenland. For many, cruising offers a way to see such places that might otherwise be inaccessible.
