Green Party Leader's Future on the Line in Crucial UK By-Election

Polls have closed in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, a contest that could significantly impact the leadership of the Green Party and its direction. Zack Polanski, the party's leader, is vying to replace former Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in the north London seat.

Early projections suggest Polanski is likely to be defeated by Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali. A victory for Polanski would see him become the sixth Green MP in the House of Commons. However, a significant loss is expected to intensify calls for a review of the party's strategy and Polanski's leadership, particularly after a period where the Greens saw a surge in popularity earlier in the year but have since experienced a dip in the polls.

Polanski's campaign has been overshadowed by recent controversies, including a party conference vote that declared Zionism to be racism and called for the destruction of Israel. Amid this controversy, Polanski largely abstained from the vote and the conference to focus on his by-election campaign. Critics argue that under his leadership, which began in September of the previous year, the party has moved further left and away from its core ecological platform.

Zack Polanski stands to replace Sir Keir Starmer in the north London seat but is forecast to be defeated.

The Green Party has indicated that their role as the main challenger to Labour in this election is a notable achievement in itself. A party spokesman stated, "Whether we win or lose, this evening, keeping the pressure on the Labour government to deliver on these priorities will be our focus."

Despite projections, Polanski has expressed optimism on social media, suggesting the race could be decided by a narrow margin. Projections from Poll Check indicate Labour could secure 40.4% of the vote, with the Greens at 35.6%.

The electoral landscape has shifted following the emergence of Andy Burnham as a prominent Labour leader, which has reportedly coincided with a flattening of the Green Party's earlier surge. The Holborn and St Pancras seat has historically been a Labour stronghold, having been represented by Frank Dobson for 32 years and Sir Keir Starmer for 11 years.

Zack Polanski, the Green leader, is facing questions about the direction of the party.

In addition to Polanski and Abdi-Wali, the ballot includes 13 other candidates, including representatives from the Conservative, Reform UK, and Liberal Democrat parties, as well as George Galloway of the Workers Party of Britain.

In the 2024 general election, Sir Keir Starmer won the Holborn and St Pancras seat with 48.9% of the vote, with an independent candidate coming second and the Green Party in third place with 10.4%.
