Green Party Leader Faces Leadership Test Amid Falling Polls and Key By-election
Zack Polanski navigates a challenging Green Party conference, a potential leadership challenge, and a crucial by-election in a bid to regain momentum.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski is facing significant pressure as the party's opinion poll ratings have declined and he prepares for a critical by-election. Polanski's leadership comes under scrutiny at the party's conference in Brighton, his second as leader, with rumors of a potential challenge from a deputy leader circulating.
Following an initial surge in support after his election over a year ago, the 43-year-old's party has seen its poll numbers nearly halve since a March peak. This decline coincides with the Labour Party's shift to the left under leader Andy Burnham. Polanski is also expected to lose the upcoming Holborn and St Pancras by-election, a seat formerly held by Keir Starmer, where Polanski is standing as a candidate.
Political science professor Rob Ford noted that while Polanski initially attracted voters, many have since moved away, influenced by Labour's more popular leadership and a rise in Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch's ratings. Ford suggested that the Greens must strategize how to respond to Labour's policy movements and consider Polanski's continued effectiveness as a leader.
Despite the challenges, Green deputy leader Rachel Millward asserted that Polanski and the party have been instrumental in setting the political agenda over the past year. She credited Polanski's leadership with influencing Labour's policy direction and preventing a move further to the right under the previous Labour leadership.
A contentious motion to declare Zionism as a form of racism is also expected to dominate discussions at the Brighton conference. Former Green leader Caroline Lucas has publicly criticized the motion, calling it divisive and warning it could alienate Jewish members.
Meanwhile, Labour's deputy leader Lucy Powell expressed confidence in winning the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, suggesting that some former Labour voters who had switched to the Greens are now reconsidering their support under the current Labour leadership.
Polanski is scheduled to deliver his conference speech, where he is expected to propose a new policy for private renters. His plan calls for a "three-year emergency brake" on rent increases, limiting rises to the lowest of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation, wage growth, or 2 percent. This is modeled on the triple lock system used for state pensions. Polanski intends to highlight the difficulties faced by young adults struggling with housing costs and the broader issue of rents outpacing wage growth. He aims for the proposed brake to provide immediate relief and allow time for the development of a national fair rents guarantee.
Rules surrounding by-elections have also created a dispute over whether TV channels can broadcast Polanski's leadership speech live.
