A Green Party councillor in Birmingham, Siobhan Harper-Nunes, 66, has appeared in court facing charges of assaulting five individuals, including three police officers and a member of police staff. The alleged incidents occurred in the Edgbaston area of the city on August 6.

West Midlands Police arrested Harper-Nunes on suspicion of assault following reports of disorder. She was subsequently charged.

Following the charges, Harper-Nunes was suspended from the Green Party and now serves as an independent councillor on Birmingham City Council. She appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court, where she confirmed her name and address. District Judge Michelle Smith adjourned the hearing until September 17 to allow for the review of CCTV footage.

Harper-Nunes was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing. She was observed wearing a long beige coat, carrying a black handbag, and wearing sunglasses as she left court.

Before her suspension, Harper-Nunes had been involved in local politics. She was the Green Party's candidate in the 2024 West Midlands mayoral election, finishing fifth. In the 2022 local elections, she was the runner-up in the Gravelly Hill ward. She also contested the Birmingham Erdington by-election in 2022, finishing fifth.

Harper-Nunes has described herself as a political campaigner rather than a career politician. In 2006, she founded Shakti Women, an organization aimed at supporting women balancing family and career responsibilities. She has also served as vice-chair of the Birmingham Race Impact Group and has spoken about the need for politicians to set positive examples and combat hatred, specifically referencing Islamophobia and antisemitism in politics.
