A Green Party councillor in Birmingham, England, has been charged with assaulting five individuals, including three police officers. The charges stem from an incident reported to West Midlands Police on August 6 near the junction of Monument Road and Hagley Road in Edgbaston.

Siobhan Harper-Nunes, 66, was initially arrested on suspicion of assault. Following an investigation, she was formally charged on Friday with assaulting a member of the public, three police officers, and a member of police staff. She has since been released on bail and is scheduled to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on September 10.

The Green Party has suspended Harper-Nunes, who represents the Ladywood ward on Birmingham City Council, with immediate effect pending an internal investigation. Harper-Nunes previously ran as the Green Party's candidate in the West Midlands mayoral election in 2024 and also stood in the 2022 parliamentary by-election for the Erdington constituency. She also contested the Gravelly Hill ward in the May 2022 Birmingham City Council elections.

Harper-Nunes has described herself as a political campaigner rather than a career politician. In 2006, she founded Shakti Women, an organization aimed at supporting women balancing family, career, and personal life through various activities. She also served as vice-chair of the Birmingham Race Impact Group, advocating for education and attitudinal change. In 2024, she told the BBC that politicians should set positive examples and that there is no place in politics for Islamophobia and antisemitism.
