Green Leader Polanski Insists on Holborn By-Election Victory Amidst Labour Confidence
Voting is underway in the Holborn & St Pancras by-election, with Green leader Zack Polanski urging supporters to help him secure a win against Labour's favored candidate, Sagal Abdi-Wali.
Voting is underway in the Holborn & St Pancras by-election, a contest for the seat formerly held by Keir Starmer, with Green Party leader Zack Polanski expressing confidence he can win.
Mr. Polanski has been actively appealing for assistance from activists as residents cast their ballots. He stated on social media that the election is close, with potentially only a "few hundred votes in it." A projection from Poll Check suggests Labour could receive 40.4% of the vote, while the Greens might secure 35.6%.
To focus on the campaign, Mr. Polanski cut short his participation in the Green Party's annual conference in Brighton last weekend. He delivered a speech on Friday and reportedly failed to get the entire conference cancelled to allow for more activist support in London. His early departure meant he missed a controversial vote within the party on a "Zionism is Racism" policy.
A defeat for Mr. Polanski could indicate a flattening of the Green Party's recent surge, which included winning the Gorton & Denton by-election in February and achieving strong local council results in May. Such an outcome might also prompt questions about the party's leadership.
The Holborn and St Pancras constituency has been a Labour stronghold since 1983, previously held by Frank Dobson for 32 years and Sir Keir Starmer for 11 years.
Mr. Polanski argued for a Green voice in Camden to push the Labour party on issues such as rent controls and the public ownership of Thames Water, suggesting Labour has been backtracking on these points. He also emphasized the climate crisis, urging voters to reject "new drilling in the North Sea," a decision Labour chose to delay until after the by-election.
Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali is considered the bookmakers' favorite, and the party expresses growing confidence in her victory. Andy Burnham, endorsing Ms. Abdi-Wali, highlighted her commitment to the local area and her plans to address issues like rough sleeping and support for young people.
"Today, hope can win. But only if you vote for it," Mr. Burnham stated. "I have no doubt that Sagal Abdi-Wali will make a brilliant local MP for Holborn and St Pancras." He noted that Ms. Abdi-Wali found a home in the area as a refugee in the 1990s and now seeks to give back to the community.
There are 13 other candidates in the by-election, including representatives from the Conservative Party, Reform UK, and the Liberal Democrats. George Galloway of the Workers Party of Britain is also running.
In the 2024 general election, Sir Keir Starmer won the Holborn and St Pancras seat with 48.9% of the vote. The Greens came in third place in that election with 10.4% of the vote.
